What A Fan Coil Does
A hydronic fan coil moves suite air across a coil supplied with hot or chilled water by the building. The fan moves the air; valves and controls regulate the heating or cooling available from that water. A two-pipe installation usually relies on the building’s seasonal changeover. A four-pipe installation has separate hot- and chilled-water circuits, subject to the building’s operation and the controls in the suite.
What A Water-Source Heat Pump Does
A water-source heat pump contains a refrigeration circuit and exchanges heat with the building water loop. Its compressor and controls operate within the suite equipment, while building water flow and temperature remain essential to performance. A complaint about a shutdown can therefore involve the chassis, the local connections or conditions elsewhere in the building.
Why Appearance Is Not Enough
A wall grille, closet cabinet or thermostat may look similar across different systems. Hybrid equipment, such as certain vertical stacked heat pump families, adds another variation. Use the manufacturer and full model number on the equipment label, building drawings or management’s equipment records to establish the system type. Do not remove internal electrical panels to look for components.
What Changes When You Book Service
For a fan coil, describe airflow, valve response, drainage and whether the building is supplying the water needed for the season. For a heat pump, include shutdowns, thermostat messages, unusual sounds and any previous repair history. In either case, say whether neighbouring suites have a similar problem; that can help direct the investigation toward suite or building conditions.
What Changes When You Replace Equipment
A fan coil retrofit may retain a sound cabinet while replacing selected internal components. A heat pump project may involve a matched replacement chassis, new controls, a blower assembly or a larger retrofit. The correct scope depends on dimensions, capacity, controls, connections and the building system. Replacing the suite equipment does not automatically correct a building water-flow problem.
