What Is a Ductless Heat Pump System?

They are electric heating and cooling systems that do not require ductwork. Ductless heat pumps are typically used by those who wish to heat and cool additional rooms in residential & commercial properties such as top-floor office space, bedrooms, basements, garages, or sunrooms.

How Does a Ductless Heat Pump Mini-Split Work?

Mini-Split Heat Pumps consist of 3 components. To explain in plain language: Depending on your application you will have one or more indoor units,   an outdoor unit and a remote controller or thermostat to control the system. The outdoor unit aka condenser unit is a square box with a large fan and a heating coil at the back. The process is very simple. The fan receives air from the outside environment and transfers it to the heating coil. It then transfers to the refrigerant which is what’s going to create the warm/cold air and transfer it inside the house and through the Mini-Split unit indoor system.

Traditional ducted HVAC systems heat and cool your entire home without giving you the ability to customize the temperature in each room. Take for example a 3-storey townhouse. Imagine having your thermostat set in the living room while you set your whole house to be on 23 degrees. The thermostat is only able to sense the ambient temperature surrounding where it is located. Therefore higher floors could be hotter than your basement or main floor.  Mini-Split or ductless systems are often installed in older homes or buildings that are heated with a boiler or electric baseboard as well as warmer climates where ductwork is uncommon. Cottages, Condos or in-law suites are ideal scenarios for mini-split systems as well. Some homeowners also install Ductless Mini-Splits to help provide additional cooling and heating to the top floors of a larger home. This is because central air conditioners sometimes struggle to cover the top floor of a home.

What Size Ductless Air Conditioner Do I Need?

Typically, The size of the ductless air conditioner system that you need depends on the sq/ft of your place.  For example, if you are deciding to install a ductless system in your dining room or bedroom, first you need to know how big is your space to roughly determine the BTU of the system you need. We created a chart below for your reference:

  • 0 to 300 Sq/Ft = 6,000 BTU
  • 300 to 500 Sq/Ft = 9,000 BTU
  • 500 to 750 Sq/Ft = 12,000 BTU
  • 750 to 1,000 Sq/Ft = 24,000 BTU
  • 1,000 to 1,250 Sq/Ft = 30,000 BTU
  • 1,250 to 1,500 Sq/Ft = 36,000 BTU

Single-Zone Versus Multi-Zone Ductless Air Conditioner

Single Zone Ductless Air Conditioner or Heat Pump Systems come with 1 indoor unit and 1 outdoor unit whereas Multi-Zone Ductless Heat pump or Air Conditioner comes with 1 Outdoor Unit (Condenser) and up to eight Indoor unit connected to one outdoor unit. Ductless systems come in a variety of capacity sizes ranging from 0.5 TON for a single zone up to 4 Ton for multiple zone applications. You can have as many as 8 units that operate under one outdoor unit while providing different room temperatures of your desire.

How Much Does It Cost To Install a Ductless Mini-Split In Toronto?

The Short Answer is, A Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump or Air Conditioner Installation Can Range From $2500 To $5500 Per System Plus Applicable Taxes Depending on SEER Rating, Size of Your Home, the Capacity of The System, Difficulty Of Installation, and Accessories Needed.

When it comes to the price of a ductless HVAC system, spacing is the biggest consideration. The more space you have to heat or cool, the higher the capacity of indoor or outdoor units you need. Typically, the price of a ductless system is likely to be at least comparable to a central air conditioner. Unlike central air conditioners, ductless systems cannot rely on existing ductwork and blower systems to circulate the air. Therefore, in addition to the outdoor unit, one or more indoor units must be installed in each room which adds to the total cost.

What Are The Best Ductless Heat Pump & Air Conditioning Manufacturers?

When it comes to ductless heat pump or air conditioning Systems, Mitsubishi is known to be the leader in the Ductless marketplace (Check out our recent review on Top 3 Ductless Mini-Split Systems for Toronto Condos). That is because they have been in the market for a long time and their units are very well-known and reviewed. Mitsubishi’s ductless systems use inverter-driven technology which means that they don’t switch on & off to maintain the temperature of a room. Instead, the system comes on at a low level. Once the desired temperature is reached, the unit operates at a steady low speed. It may seem like it would take more energy to run constantly but the system would consume less energy since it doesn’t require that strong push of energy to get the temperature down. An interesting fact about Mitsubishi’s models is that their inverter-driven system can use the same electricity as a 40-Watt Light Bulb.

Mitsubishi Ductless Heat Pump Reviews

Comfort & Performance: Almost all Mitsubishi ductless heat pumps or air conditioning systems are equipped with quite a design technology. This is extra comfort for users who are planning to install these systems in office space or bedrooms.  All Mitsubishi Ductless Systems come with VCSi Technology.

VSCi stands for Variable Compressor Speed inverter. Unlike conventional compressor design, this technology allows new ductless systems to detect changes in the room temperature and readjust the compressor speed to provide heating or cooling as needed. This means space maintains a consistent, accurate temperature for ultimate comfort while using the minimum amount of power.

Cold Climate: Mitsubishi Hyper Heat Pumps (M-Series) are designed to operate in colder climate conditions up to minus 25 degrees. Most standard ductless heat pump systems are not able to function below minus 5 degrees. Mitsubishi offers the highest SEER, and EER rating in the industry as well as COP energy efficiency for these types of weather conditions.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is a measure meant for how efficiently an air conditioning system will operate over an entire cooling season.

EER stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is a measurement of how efficiently a cooling system will operate at a  specified outdoor temperature (35 degrees) during the cooling season. In Canada, the number of days that require heating exceeds those that need cooling. Therefore the energy and cost-saving are marginal between systems with a higher SEER rating.

Quality & Warranty: Mitsubishi is an award-winning #1 preferred HVAC brand when it comes to ductless products. Depending on your system model number, Mitsubishi Electric offers up to a 10-year warranty on part and compressor.

What Are The Advantages & Disadvantages of Installing a Ductless Air Conditioner System?

All Ductless HVAC systems have their pros and cons, but it is your needs that determine the best available choice for your home. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits and disadvantages of mini-split heat pumps so you can make an informed decision.

Advantage:

  • No ductwork is required. If you have multiple rooms that you want to run air conditioning to without running ductwork. A mini-split is a way to go.
  • A ductless heat pump requires minimal holes and building modifications.
  • Ductless Heat Pumps can extract heat from an outside temperature down to 15 below Fahrenheit which makes it very energy efficient and very powerful even in a very low outside temperature
  • Ductless air conditioners can provide more flexibility for unconventional spaces and places without ductwork including commercial buildings. This may make the cost lower than buying a new furnace and central air conditioner. However, if you need to purchase multiple units and heads, the cost could easily increase

Disadvantage:

  • Be cautious of electricity rates and usage, especially if you are considering using a mini-split as your primary source of heating. Ductless heat pumps run entirely on electricity which can become very costly in cold winter months depending on local electricity prices.
  • Some homeowners do not like the look of the indoor units hanging on their walls.
  • Oversized or incorrectly located indoor unit during installation can cause short-cycling, which leads to wasted energy and improper temperature and humidity control

Mini-Split systems are a great heating and cooling solution for a variety of circumstances. If you are deciding to go with heat pump ductless systems, make sure to really evaluate the pros and cons and speak to one of our experts to make an informed decision.
